Eh,
Tough one to swallow.
As I said in my preseason predictions for the team, kickers are the most undervalued position in all of sports and always the second most important player on the team.
Yesterday showed us why.
On a side note…
If what I’m about to say applies to you, please make the necessary adjustments…
If I’ve been texting you during a Vikings game, most likely you are either a close friend, a family member, or someone I enjoy sports chat with.
If I haven’t texted you at all during the game…UNLESS your last name is Keil…DON’T text me after it’s over. I don’t have any space for that in my life.
“Oh hey Jordan, what happened to your Vikings today? Lol.”
That’s always one of my favorites.
Sometimes I get so mad I want to write something back like “oh hey, how’s that divorce going? Isn’t that the second one for you? What happened there? You’d think you’d wanna be absolutely sure about something like marriage before diving in like that…lol”
Or a number of other below the belt things regarding any number of individuals.
(Adding to the torture was yesterday I received them all at once. After the missed kick I threw my phone across the room and left it there for awhile so they had all accumulated for me. Blessings.)
Thank goodness cooler heads have prevailed thus far and no such thing has been texted as of yet.
But still. It irks the hell out of me.
Oddly enough I’d have no problem with it if all the people that come out of the woodwork after a dramatic loss like yesterdays would also drop me an occasional “great win” or “congratulations” after a victory every once in awhile.
But I digress.
I’ll leave you with two quotes from Mike Zimmer.
This one from the post game press conference when asked if the kicker is in any jeopardy of losing his job…
“Yeah, I mean, I don’t think you should make a decision today on things like that. You know, I don’t think you make decisions on personnel right after a guy misses a kick.”
And now his Daniel Carlson (one of the best kickers in the league, current Las Vegas Raider, and former high draft pick of the Minnesota Vikings, cut after week 2 during his rookie season) quote from 2018 when asked what went into the decision to let Carlson go?
“Did you see the game? Pretty easy decision.”
Oooooooooohhhhh.
And how’s life as a place-kicker been in Minnesota since?
